Mitsumata
– A Signature Material of Shuzenji Paper –
Mitsumata, a key raw material of Shuzenji washi, is known for its short fibers compared to other washi materials. This results in a soft, glossy paper with a slight yellowish tint. In the past, Shuzenji paper made from mitsumata was called Shuzenji Iro Yoshigami (color-rich paper of Shuzenji). Additionally, its smooth surface and minimal ink bleed make it ideal for writing with a brush.
Kouzo
– The Most Common Washi Material in Japan –
Kouzo, the most widely used material for washi in Japan, has longer fibers than other materials. This gives the paper exceptional strength and a less glossy finish. Its natural color tends to be white, and it is more prone to ink bleeding. Due to its durability, kouzo paper has been widely used not only for writing but also for crafting everyday items requiring strength, such as shoji screens, Japanese umbrellas, and lanterns.
Chiri-Iri
– Patterned Paper with Mixed Bark –
Chiri-iri is a patterned paper created by blending the black bark from mitsumata or kouzo into the pulp. While mitsumata and kouzo remain the primary raw materials, this type of paper was historically less favored because white paper was considered superior at the time. However, in today's world, where white paper is ubiquitous, chiri-iri has gained popularity for its unique texture and natural charm.
At our company, we primarily produce and sell washi using the three materials mentioned above: mitsumata, kouzo, and chiri-iri.
Additionally, we can create custom washi by blending mitsumata or kouzo with other materials to craft unique, original designs.
